I have a shiny new Sony alpha 300 digital SLR, courtesy of the Circuit City going-out-of-business sale. Their prices are still lousy on most of the things I want (10% off a 20%-too-high price is uninteresting), but the cameras were 30% off, and that beat what I could find online. I was still debating the 200/300 question, and CC had one of each left. The 300 is nearly identical to the 200, but adds a live preview on the LCD screen. Because of the way the innards work, it’s harder to put a live preview on a digital SLR, so while all point-and-shoots have that feature, fewer low-end DSLRs do. I decided that it was worth the extra money to not have to look through the viewfinder, since I’m fond of odd angles and macro photography.

I haven’t yet read the book, or done any strenuous tests. Instead, I wandered around the house last night shooting whatever took my fancy. These are all low-light or flash, and have had little or no editing other than cropping.

String, of course.

Kitchen photography, and playing with focus. Even with a mostly-automatic DSLR, there are many more options available than with a point-and-shoot.

My carpet isn’t really that orange, and Morgan doesn’t really look like a weeble, but that’s pretty good for indoors with no flash.

Equal time for the dog. This mix of silks was taken this morning, in the sun. These are some of the skeins that I’ve had the most trouble photographing accurately with my Canon. I haven’t tried any of my Minolta lenses yet, and I’ll definitely need a refresher on the finer points of “real” photography as well. It’s been a long time since I’ve needed to know anything about aperture and focal length, but it’s also a long time since I’ve had any fine-grained control over my photographs.
