Shire of Nithgaard
The Shire of Nithgaard is a branch of the Society for Creative Anachronism, an organization devoted to recreating the culture of the Middle Ages. We are located in the Kingdom of AEthelmearc, which includes West Virginia, western Pennsylvania, and western New York. Our group is based in State College, PA (including Penn State University), and includes Centre, Blair, and Huntingdon counties, as well as parts of Mifflin County.
According to the official web page, the SCA is an international organization dedicated to researching and re-creating the arts and skills of pre-17th-century Europe. Our "Known World" consists of 19 kingdoms, with over 30,000 members residing in countries around the world. Members, dressed in clothing of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, attend events which may feature tournaments, arts exhibits, classes, workshops, dancing, feasts, and more. Our "royalty" hold courts at which they recognize and honor members for their contributions to the group.
Our next event will be Imbolc on 23 February, 2008.
Mailing List
The Shire maintains an email list. It is open to all, and can be joined by signing up at Yahoo groups. Besides announcements and discussion, we maintain a complete archive of business meeting minutes and important files here.
Activities
Business meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month (except August), at 7:45PM in 103 Walker Building on the Penn State Campus (map).
We can be found in 103 Walker Bldg. every Thursday evening from 7-9PM. People come for workshops, classes, and to work on their own projects.
When the weather is good, fencing practice happens on Friday afternoons, 5:30 or 6PM, on the open area across Atherton from Rec Hall. Fencers sometimes also meet on Sunday afternoons during heavy weapons practice on the HUB lawn.
Heavy weapons is being held on the HUB lawn, Sundays Noon-4PM.
Either of these may be cancelled due to wet weather other events. Please contact the appropriate marshal for more information.
